Crab Nebula (NASA)
Scientists think the things they've discovered about
our Sun are true of other stars as well.
Other stars have "solar" winds,
and dying stars leave marks of their magnetism.
When a dying star explodes, the expanding
plasma is shaped by magnetic and electric
forces into beautiful structures like the
Crab nebula.
Not
only stars and planets are magnetic. Entire
galaxies, including our own Milky Way,
have magnetic fields too.
Our
knowledge sends us out to the stars
As
we come to understand space weather – the
importance of plasmas, space storms and
magnetic fields – our understanding
of the universe becomes clearer. This knowledge
helps us protect our technology and our
way of life. It also prepares us to set
sail through gusts of solar wind and take
our first steps onto other worlds. Bon
Voyage!
