Beyond
our Magnetic Bubble lies the rest of
the Milky Way
Within
the heliosphere, the solar wind flows mostly
unimpeded. The asteroids, comets and planets
it encounters have little effect. Beyond
the heliosphere lies interstellar space – a
region that contains dust & plasma,
sprinkled with other stars and their magnetic
bubbles.
Other planets besides Earth have magnetic fields and magnetospheres
Earth
isn't the only planet to have a magnetosphere.
Earth's neighbor Mercury has one, and all
the giant planets – Jupiter, Saturn,
Neptune and Uranus – have huge magnetospheres.
We do know
Venus and Mars don't have planetary magnetic
fields or magnetospheres – but we
don’t yet know why.
Auroras
Everywhere
Auroras
have been spotted on all of the giant planets.
The basic mechanism for causing auroras
is the same on these planets as it is at
Earth– charged
particles accelerated toward the magnetic
poles – but on the giant planets
auroras are hundreds to thousands of times
more powerful.
