A bit of history...

The astronauts who visited the Moon were very lucky that they did not receive dangerously high doses of radiation due to space weather. A powerful Solar Flare occurred during the solar maximum of 1972, between Apollo missions 16 and 17. Had astronauts been in transit to or from the Moon at the time, they might have received a deadly amount of radiation.
